Big Offensive Day Propels Birds' To Series Win
SIOUX FALLS, SD— Starting pitcher Joe Bircher put together another stellar performance, and the Canaries offense posted a season high in runs and hits as the Birds’ cruised to a 9-1 win over the Grand Prairie AirHogs on Wednesday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Bircher earned his second victory of the season after allowing one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings, recording a season high five strikeouts. The lefty carried a no-hit bid into the top of the 5th inning before allowing a one-out single to Grand Prairie’s centerfielder, Hayden Jennings.
Bircher kept the shutout intact until the top of the 7th inning, when AirHog’s first baseman Trevor Harden hit a solo home run over the right field wall to make it a 3-1 ball game.
Canaries catcher, Richard Stock got the Birds on the board with an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning, after stroking an RBI single into left field. Stock struck again in the bottom of the 8th inning, crushing a solo homerun (3) over the wall in right.
First baseman, Edwin Gomez also homered in the 8th inning, driving a three-run blast to right-center for his first round-tripper of the season.
The Birds’ hit three homeruns overall on Wednesday afternoon, setting a season high in both hits (14) and runs (9).
Gomez wrapped up his best day in a Canaries uniform, going 2-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Stock ended his afternoon 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored.
The Canaries improved to 10-10 with the win, and sit one game ahead of the Winnipeg Goldeyes for second place in the North Division as they gear up for a big four-game series against the St. Paul Saints at the Birdcage this weekend.
