Birds acquire 2016 American Association league leader in HR via trade
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries announced Monday morning that they have acquired OF Burt Reynolds from the Laredo Lemurs in exchange for OF Matty Johnson, who was acquired from Sioux City in August as a part of the Shawn Blackwell trade.
Reynolds, 28, was tied for the lead league in home runs last season, checking in with 24 long balls. He finished 2016 with a .249/.334/.518/.852 slash line, 13 stolen bases, and 50 runs batted in. Prior to joining the Independant ranks, Reynolds spent time in the Tampa Bay Rays, and Seattle Mariners organization.
"Burt is going to be a huge piece in the middle of our order," says Canaries Manager Mike Meyer. "He brings the threat of a long ball every time he steps up to the plate. Not only is he a big bat in our lineup, but he is a plus defender, with a Major League arm. We are lucky to have him, and look forward to him bringing alot of excitement to the Birdcage this summer."
The Birds open up their season on the road against the Sioux City Explorers on May 18th. Their first home series begins Saturday, May 20th against the Explorers.
