BIRDS ACQUIRE BIG BAT FROM SUSSEX COUNTY
SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Thursday morning that the club has acquired first baseman Chris Jacobs in a trade with the Sussex County Miners of the CanAm League, completing a previous trade made on April 15th that send OF Jay Austin to the Miners.
The 27-year-old played 81 games for Sussex in 2016, enjoying great success slashing .291/.369/.569 with 21 home runs and 70 runs batted in. Although he wasn't with the Miners to start the season, Jacobs finished 2nd in the league in home runs, 4th in runs batted in, and 3rd in OPS. During his final 10 games, Chris collected 12 hits, 12 RBI’s, and 4 home runs.
Prior to joining the Miners, Jacobs was a 17th round draft pick in 2007 by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jacobs spent 8 seasons in LA’s organization before signing with the Chicago White Sox in 2015 and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016. His best season came in 2014 with LA's High A affiliate Rancho Cucamonga, where he drew 75 walks and slugged 28 doubles, 25 home runs, and 94 RBI’s in 126 games.
“We are very excited to be able to acquire a player of Chris’ caliber,” says Canaries GM Duell Higbe. “He is a true middle of the order run producer, and should put up big numbers here at the Birdcage.”
The Canaries open up their 25th season on the road May 18th against the I-29 rival Sioux City Explorers. The Birds kick off their home schedule on Saturday, May 20th at 6:05pm.
