Birds Announce Opening Day Starter, Pitching Rotation
SIOUX FALLS, SD -- Sioux Falls Canaries ace and left-handed pitcher Joe Bircher was announced as the teams Opening Day starter on Monday night.
It will be the first Opening Day start for Bircher, who enters his 4th season with the Birds in 2017. The Omaha, NE native made 19 starts for the Canaries last season, finishing the year with a 6-6 record and 2.55 ERA. It was one of Bircher’s best seasons as professional, despite a lack of run support from the Canaries offense.
The 27-year-old Bircher holds a 14-18 record and 3.30 ERA in three seasons with Sioux Falls.
Newcomer Bryce Morrow is second in the rotation, set to make his first start on May 19th. Former Seattle Mariners prospect Grady Wood will start the Home Opener on May 20th, followed by former Laredo Lemurs right-hander Troy Marks in the series finale on May 21st.
Fans will be able to listen to all of the action, all season long, on Sioux Falls Sports Radio, AM-1230 and FM-98.1 KWSN. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45 PM.
The Sioux Falls Canaries enter their 25th season on May 18th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park. The home portion of the 2017 schedule opens on Saturday, May 20th at the Birdcage.
