Birds Bolster Bullpen
SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Wednesday afternoon that the organization has come to terms with right-handed pitchers Grady Wood and Scott Weismann for the 2017 American Association season.
Wood, 26, was originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 10th round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft out of Western Oregon University. He spent four minor league seasons with the Mariners, posting an 18-12 record and 3.62 ERA while striking out 237 batters over 151 total appearances.
The Junction City, OR native reached the double-A level with the Southern League’s Jackson Generals in 2015, going 4-2 with 4.35 ERA. He made 36 relief appearances for the Generals, striking out 41 batters over 60 innings of work. Wood joined the independent ranks in 2016, joining the Atlantic League’s New Britain Bee’s, where he went 3-2 with a 3.49 ERA. The right-handed reliever finished the season with 27 strikeouts and just 10 walks over 28 1/3 innings of work.
Weismann, 27, was originally drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 18th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft out of Acton-Boxboro HS in West Acton, MA and again in the 46th round of the 2011 draft by the Chicago Cubs out of Clemson University.
The talented right-hander made 39 appearances at three different levels of the Cubs minor league system during the 2012 season, going 3-5 with a 4.91 ERA while striking out 52 batters over 58 2/3 innings. Weismann reached the independent level in 2013, making 42 relief appearances for the Frontier League’s Evansville Otters. He went 5-2 with Evansville, posting a 3.23 ERA while striking out 73 batters over 64 innings of work.
Weismann joined the American Association in 2014, catching on with the Laredo Lemurs, where he went 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA over 18 relief appearances. He has not pitched professionally since the 2014 season, but enters the 2017 season with a career record of 9-7 to go along with his 3.94 ERA.
The Sioux Falls Canaries enter their 25th season on May 18th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park.
