SIOUX FALLS, SD-  The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Friday afternoon that the team has re-signed right-handed pitcher Stephen Bougher for the 2016 season.

Bougher made 16 starts for the Birds’ in 2015, going 6-5 with a 3.53 ERA, and was the only starting pitcher in the rotation to finish with an above .500 record. 2016 will be Bougher’s fourth professional season, and his second with the Birds.  He holds an overall record of 17-20 and a 4.15 ERA in 53 American Association appearances.

The former South Dakota State University standout happened to be back in the Sioux Falls area for a wedding on June 12th when the Canaries called looking for a pitcher. The right-hander stepped in to make an emergency start in the opening game of a double-header against the Red-hot St. Paul Saints, who entered the night with a 17-2 record. Bougher held the dangerous Saints offense in check, allowing just five hits over six shutout innings. He  helped guide the Canaries to complete game victory, and earned a spot in the Canaries starting rotation.

Bougher went 3-2 in his final seven starts, and watched his ERA drop from 5.23 to 3.53 after allowing just seven earned runs over his final 37 2/3 innings. Bougher capped off his season with back-to-back wins against the Lincoln SaltDogs and Joplin Blasters, and did not allow a run on a combined seven hits over the final 15 innings. He finished the season tied for the team lead in wins (6) and was third on the team in innings pitched (94.1).

“We really liked the way our starting rotation finished out the season last year,” said second year field manager Chris Paterson. “We want to capitalize on that momentum. Stephen is going to play a big part in that for us this season.”

Bougher and The Canaries begin their 24th season on May 19th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park.  The Birds kick off the 2016 home portion of their schedule on Friday, May 20th with a special presentation from All-Star Fireworks after the game.
