Birds Cruise To 7-2 Win Behind Blackwell's Complete Game

WINNIPEG, MB- Starting pitcher Shawn Blackwell put together his third complete-game performance of the season, and the Sioux Falls Canaries (37-58) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (43-52) by the final score of 7-2 win at on Wednesday night at Shaw Park.
Blackwell (4-9, 3.83 ERA) returned to Winnipeg for the first time since suffering a 3-2 complete-game loss on August 11th. The League, TX native ensured a different result this time around, holding the Goldeyes to two runs on seven hits, while striking out five batters over nine innings.
The right-hander faced the minimum over his first three innings before giving up a lead-off single to Adam Heisler, who later scored a run on a Casey Haerther RBI single to center field. Blackwell ran into trouble again in the bottom of the fifth inning, walking two Goldeyes batters before Heisler picked up an RBI of his own on a two-out single to center. Blackwell retired 13 of the final 16 batters he faced in the win, including a double play and a strikeout to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Goldeyes starting pitcher Nick Hernandez (8-8, 3.25 ERA) suffered his second straight loss to the Canaries after allowing seven runs on nine hits over five innings.
Brian Humphries led the Birds offensively going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. RJ Perucki also had a good night, going 2-for-4 with two RBI’s in the win.
The series continues on Thursday night, with RHP Ray Hanson (1-0, 5.25 ERA) making his third start for the Birds.
