SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A strong outing from Sioux Falls Canaries starter Cesilio Pimentel was not enough, as the Canaries fell 5-4 on Sunday afternoon to Texas. Pimentel improved his league-leading ERA to 1.67 by allowing one earned run over 6.1 innings. Jordan Smith and Burt Reynolds each hit a homer in the loss.

The Canaries took an early lead for the second straight game with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Jordan Smith was the next batter to dig in, blasting his second home run of the season to give Sioux Falls a 2-0 lead.

Texas got a run back in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Birds catcher Maxx Garrett attempted to pick off the runner at second. The runner at third, Dillon Thomas, hustled in from third to steal home.

Outside of a run in the sixth, Pimentel, continued his excellent season. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) and struck out seven.

With the bases loaded and no one out in the fifth, the Canaries got one run home with their second sacrifice fly of the afternoon to push their lead back to two runs.

In the seventh inning, the AirHogs scraped across two runs on a double and fielder’s choice to tie the game up at three. Texas got another pair in the eighth to take their first lead of the game at 5-3.

Sioux Falls got one back in the bottom of the ninth with Burt Reynolds’ fourth homer of the season, but they could not get the tying run, dropping the rubber game 5-4.

Jordan Smith’s second home run of the year extended his hitting streak to seven games … Sioux Falls suffered their first loss of the season when leading after the sixth inning (10-1) … Sioux Falls’ pitcher Cesilio Pimentel leads the American Association in ERA, lowering the statistic to 1.67 in the loss … the Canaries are 2-6 in one-run games … Mitch Glasser and Jordan Dean both have a hit in each game they have played for Sioux Falls this season, now on three-game hitting streaks.

Sioux Falls heads on the road for a nine-game trip to Cleburne, Texas and Kansas City. The Canaries will be back at the Birdcage on July 6 for a weekend series against Gary Southshore.
