Wichita, KS – The Sioux Falls Canaries fell to the Wichita Wingnuts, 9-4, the second of three-game at Lawrence Dumont Stadium between the Birds and Wingnuts Saturday evening.

Though Brett Marr gave the Canaries the first base runner of the game on a leadoff double, it was the Wingnuts who put the first runs on the scoreboard.

After Harrison Kain led off the bottom of the first with a walk, Wichita followed with back-to-back-to-back singles to take a 1-0 lead and load the bases for Matt Chavez. Chavez reached on an error to score two before Martin Media made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.

But Troy Marks settled down after the first, retiring the next six batters before Chavez’ one-out walk in the bottom of the third.

And after the Birds put just one runner on over the first three innings, Burt Reynolds’ cut the deficit in half with a two-run homer in the top of fourth.

Following his third 1-2-3 inning of the day in the top of the fifth, Marks came out for the top of the sixth with his pitch count in the upper 80s, and while Marks did get through the inning, he allowed the Wingnuts to extend the lead to 5-2 on Leo Vargas’ bloop single.

Marks allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits, walking three and striking out five over six innings pitched. On the other side of the mound, Alex Boshers kept in the Canaries in check for much of the day aside from Reynolds’ two-run home run, allowing just two runs on five hits over seven innings pitched.

Brent Clevlen’s solo home run extended Wichita’s lead to 6-2 before the Birds tried to rally against the Wingnuts bullpen in the eighth and ninth.

Chad Nading walked the first two batters in the top of the eighth before Ty Morrison cleared the bases with a two-run double to cut the Wingnuts’ lead to 6-4.

But the Wingnuts answered with three in the bottom of the eighth, and Mike Devine shut down the Canaries in the top of the ninth to give the Wingnuts the 9-4 victory.

Marks takes the loss for Sioux Falls, who fall to 25-29 on the season, while Boshers picks up the win for the Wingnuts, who move to 37-16 on the year.
