Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Sioux Falls Canaries late rally wasn’t enough, as they fell in game one of their three-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes, 14-8 at Shaw Park Friday night.
The Goldeyes roughed up Canaries’ starter Miles Nordgren in the bottom of the first inning, scoring seven runs on seven hits to take an early 7-0 lead.
Nordgren settled down after the first inning, retiring the next eight batters, including a 1-2-3 bottom of the second and third inning, keeping the Winnipeg lead a seven.
Burt Reynolds got the Canaries on the board in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, but the Goldeyes came right back and extended their lead in the bottom of the inning on Reggie Abercrombie’s three-run homer.
Nordgren finished the night allowing 10 runs on 10 hits over 4.0 innings pitched, striking out a season-high four batters, but the Goldeyes offensive night continued, as they tacked on two more against Josh Farrell in the bottom of the fifth.
The Birds came back with two in the top of the sixth, on Reynolds’ second homer of the game and back-to-back doubles from Ty Morrison and Louis Mele, but the Goldeyes equaled their total in the bottom of the inning, extending their lead to 14-3.
James Jones and Nicco Blank kept the Goldeyes’ run total at 14, combining to pitch two scoreless innings out of the Birds’ bullpen.
In the top of the ninth, the Birds rallied, stringing together four hits and a walk to cut Winnipeg’s lead to 14-8, but Mele grounded out to end the threat.
Burt Reynolds had himself a day for the Canaries, going 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and five RBI, while Mele added three hits in the loss.
Nordgren takes the loss for the Canaries, who fall to 19-21 on the season. Mikey O’Brien picks up the win for the Goldeyes, allowing five runs on 10 hits over eight innings pitched, while Winnipeg moves to 20-20 on the year.
