Birds Offense Falters In Loss To Goldeyes

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Canaries fell to Winnipeg in the series opener on Tuesday night. Starter John Straka pitched into trouble in the fifth inning, giving Winnipeg a three-run lead they did not relinquish.
Sioux Falls faced an uphill task on Tuesday night with Winnipeg starter Mitchell Lambson on the mound. Lambson came into Tuesday’s game with 15 innings of one-run ball against Sioux Falls this season.
The Canaries and Goldeyes were scoreless through four, then Winnipeg struck first. They tagged John Straka for three runs in the fifth. Tyler Baker scored on a sacrifice fly from Tucker Nathans and Matt McCann singled home Jordan Ebert and McClain Bradley to make it 3-0. Nicco Blank came in with two on and one out, wrapping up the inning without further damage.
The Canaries had their best opportunity to strike in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with two outs. Chris Grayson lined out to the second baseman to end the inning.
In the eighth, Jordan Ebert singled home Josh McAdams to extend the Goldeyes’ lead to 4-0.
In the home half of the inning, Sioux Falls finally got to Lambson after 17-straight scoreless innings. Blake Schmit grounded out to second to bring in Chris Grayson, putting the score at 4-1 after eight.
Reggie Abercrombie singled home Nathans in the ninth to earn an insurance run at 5-1.
ODDS AND ENDS
David Bergin continued his hitting streak on Tuesday, now with a hit in 14-straight games … Jabari Henry broke his lengthy streak, ending at eight games … Winnipeg’s starting pitcher, Mitchell Lambson, has now pitched 22.2 innings this season against Sioux Falls, only surrendering two runs … Sioux Falls is 7-11 when the opposing starter is a left-hander … in games started by John Straka, the Canaries are 1-1.
