Birds Re-Sign Joe Bircher
SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Canaries announced on Wednesday morning that they have agreed to terms with starting pitcher Joe Bircher. Marking his 5th season in a Birds uniform.
Bircher, 27, has been a staple atop the rotation over the past few seasons, making a total of 75 starts totaling 450.2 innings, while carrying a 3.91 ERA. 2017 was a deceiving year for the Omaha, Nebraska native. Although he finished with a 4.59 ERA, he was a work horse for the club hurling 125.1 innings and providing 12 quality starts.
“Joe is one of those guys that gives you a chance to win every time he toes the rubber,” says Canaries GM Duell Higbe. “He has been one of the best starting pitchers in our club’s history, and we couldn’t be happier to have him back for another season. He makes the club better in so many ways. Not only does he give us 6-plus innings every fifth night, but he provides great leadership to the younger players.”
“One of the things we needed to improve on this offseason was our rotation,” stated Manager Mike Meyer. “Joe is a tremendous competitor who brings stability to our staff. Not only does he give us a great chance to win, but he saves our bullpen and takes pressure off of the other starters. I look for Joe to be the veteran leader that we need at the top of our rotation.”
The Birds open their season on Friday, May 18th against the American Association’s newest club, the Chicago Dogs.
