SIOUX FALLS - Charlie Valerio and Troy Alexander each racked up a pair of hits, but the Canaries dropped their 2021 American Association regular season opener 9-0 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes Tuesday at The Birdcage. The teams meet for the second game of the three-game series Wednesday at 7:05 pm.

Valerio, who will represent the Dominican Republic in Olympic baseball qualifying trials, posted a single and a triple. Alexander, a former St. Paul Saint in his first year with the Canaries, posted a pair of singles.

The Birds boarded men on second and third with one out in the first but could not break through. Winnipeg tagged Sioux Falls starter Angel Ventura (0-1) for five runs in a laborious third to build a 5-0 advantage they would not relinquish.
