Bougher Tosses Complete-Game Shutout In 5-0 Win

LINCOLN, NE— The Sioux Falls Canaries (35-56) continued their four-game series against the Lincoln SaltDogs ( on Saturday night at Haymarket Park. Starting pitcher Stephen Bougher put together his best performance of the season, allowing just three hits in the 5-0, complete game, shutout victory.

Bougher (5-5, 3.77 ERA) battled with command issues early on, walking three batters over the first three innings, but did not give up a hit until the bottom of the fourth. The right-hander gave up a lead-off single to Lincoln’s Curt Smith, before a double play and a strikeout ended the inning.

The SaltDogs threatened again in the bottom of the fifth inning after the first two batters of the inning reached base before Brian Joynt hit a ground ball back to Bougher, starting a 1-6-3 double play. Lincoln’s last threat of the night came in the bottom of the 7th, when Juan Medina reached base on a two out single before Mike Gilmartin popped up to end the inning.

Bougher retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced, including three consecutive strikeouts to between the 8th and 9th innings. The Papillion, NE native finished the night with 144 pitches, 86 for strikes, his highest pitch total of the season.

The Canaries were led offensively by David Bergin, who finished the night 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI’s. Outfielder Chris Grayson extended his hitting streak to five games, after going 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Jerome Pena also posted a multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.

The Birds’ will go for the series win on Sunday night at 5:05 PM with LHP Miguel Pena (6-7, 3.44 ERA) taking the mound against Lincoln’s LHP Kevin McGovern (5-8, 5.25 ERA).
