Brebbia's Outing Wasted and Canaries Swept in Gary
By Aaron Rosenberg
GARY, IN - John Brebbia gave the Canaries everything they could have asked of him, throwing six shutout innings and striking out five. He received neither the run support nor the bullpen help he would need to earn his third win and the righthander took a hard-luck no decision as the Canaries lost their ninth straight game, 7-1 to the Gary Southshore RailCats.
Staked to a 1-0 lead on Kevin Dultz's single that scored Stephen Branca, Brebbia cruised through his six innings of work and handed the bullpen a lead to protect. The game immediately went south for the Canaries in the 7th and Kyle Kingsley was greeted by a leadoff homerun from Craig Maddox to tie things at 1. Wally Backman followed with a double and the Canaries failed to record an out on the ensuing sacrifice bunt as an attempt to throw out Backman at third base was late. After Zac Mitchell drew a walk to load the bases, pinch-hitter Jeremy Hamilton cleared the bases with his double and the RailCats led 4-1. Kirk Clark relieved Kinglsey and didn't fare much better and by the end of decisive 7th inning, the RailCats were up 7-1 and the Canaries never mounted a serious threat.
The focus for the Canaries now turns to getting a win in St Paul, where they head for a three-game series beginning Monday night. The canaries split four games with the Saints during the season's first road trip and they will try to get back in the win column against their North division rival. First pitch for all games is 7:05 and fans can listen live on AM 1230 and FM 98.1 KWSN or stream via KWSN.com.
