Canaries Acquire RHP Pete Perez and Catcher Grant Nelson In Trade

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Wednesday afternoon that the team has acquired RHP Pete Perez and C Grant Nelson from the Gateway Grizzlies (Frontier League) to complete the June 1 trade between the two clubs.
The 24-year-old Perez enters the 2016 season with a 7-9 career record and 3.36 ERA. The right-hander made 44 relief appearances in 2014 with the Atlanta Braves class-A affiliate in Rome, GA. He registered a career high in strikeouts (59) and innings pitched (57.2) while posting a 3.28 ERA in 44 appearances.
Perez entered the Independent ranks in 2015, posting a 3-2 record and 3.72 ERA while making 47 relief appearances for the Southern Illinois Miners and Gateway Grizzlies.
Nelson was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 9th round of the 2013 MLB draft out of St. Louis University. The 24-year-old Nelson is an excellent defensive catcher, throwing out 44% of potential base runners in two minor league seasons. Nelson appeared in 10 games for the Gateway Grizzlies in 2015, throwing out four base stealers in 15 tries.
