Canaries Activate Outfielder Jabari Henry, Release Taylor
WINNIPEG, MB - The Sioux Falls Canaries have activated outfielder Jabari Henry from the disabled list and released 1B/DH Jake Taylor. Henry will make his season debut for the Birds in tonight’s game (Thursday) against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
Henry was performing at a high level for the Canaries during spring training. The right-handed power hitter homered in three straight exhibition games before suffering a hamstring injury on May 15th. The injury forced the talented young outfielder to the disabled list for the first two weeks of the 2017 season.
The 26-year-old outfielder was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 18th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Florida International University. The Orlando, FL native spent four seasons in the Mariners minor league system, batting .252 with 153 extra-base hits and 232 RBI. His best minor league season came in 2014 with the Class A Advanced High Desert Mavericks, where he hit .291 with 30 home runs, 26 doubles, and 95 RBI in 114 games.
Henry appeared in 91 games at the Double-A level in 2015 with the Southern League’s Jackson Generals, batting .168 with 28 extra-base hits. He received his release prior to spring training in 2016 before being picked up by the Los Angeles Angels. Henry appeared in 102 games for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers during the 2016 season, hitting .213 with 26 extra-base hits and 51 RBI.
The hard hitting outfielder enters his sixth professional season in 2017, his first at the independent level. He holds a .244 career batting average with 180 extra-base hits and 283 RBI.
The 30-year-old Taylor was released after a slow start and several lingering injuries sidelined the experienced infielder. Taylor appeared in seven games for the Birds in 2017, batting .136 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
The series in Winnipeg wraps up on Thursday night with a 7:0 5 p.m. first pitch scheduled at Shaw Park. RHP Grady Wood (0-0, 4.90 ERA) will take the mound for the Birds in search of his first win of the season. Fans can listen to all of the action starting at 6:45 p.m. on Sioux Falls Sports Radio, AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
The Canaries return home on Friday, June 2nd when they open up a three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones. Be sure to stick around after the game for the first Friday Night All-Star Fireworks Spectacular, presented by the Orthopedic Institute and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.
