Canaries Activate Santos, Trade Flores
The Sioux Falls Canaries welcomed back a big piece of their lineup on Friday. First baseman Trae Santos, who joined the Canaries in an offseason trade, is back on the active roster after three weeks on the disabled list.
In a corresponding move, the Canaries traded reliever Ryan Flores to Les Aigles de Trois-Rivières of the CanAm League for a player to be named later.
Santos returns to the Canaries after being sidelined since May 18 with knee soreness. He played the first two games of the 2019 season, going 1-for-7 with an RBI single.
Santos led the Frontier League's Gateway Grizzlies with an .863 OPS last year (.371/.492). A former Padres farmhand, he owns a career .232/.320/.390 slash line in the minor leagues.
Flores, who came to the Birds to complete a trade with the Sioux City Explorers before this season, made 9 appearances with the Canaries in 2019. He allowed eight runs in eight innings of work, walking seven and striking out 11.
Friday's game is part of a nine-game season-opening homestand for the Birds, including games through Sunday. Friday is another famous All-Star Fireworks Night, presented by Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.
