Canaries Activate Bo Hellquist, Release Josh Ferrell
Kansas City, KS – The Sioux Falls Canaries have activated LHP Bo Hellquist off the inactive list and released LHP Josh Ferrell.
Hellquist signed as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Twins after his senior season at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and played the 2016 season with the Gulf Coast League Twins.
With the GCL Twins, Hellquist went 5-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 10 starts and 11 total appearances. In 52.0 innings pitched, Hellquist struck out 46 batters, and walked just seven, before joining the Sioux Falls Canaries in the Independent ranks.
A native of Savage, Minnesota, and a graduate of Burnsville High School, Hellquist began the season with the Canaries on the inactive list.
In four seasons for the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, Hellquist compiled a 16-11 and a 3.49 ERA in 35 starts and 41 total appearances. During his time with the Bulldogs, Hellquist also played for the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League following the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Ferrell, in his third season with the Canaries, was 2-3 with a 7.57 ERA in 15 relief appearances.
The Sioux Falls Canaries return home on Friday, July 7th for a three-game series against the Wichita Wingnuts. Friday night is Hawaiian Luau Night at the Birdcage. Fans who wear a Hawaiian shirt or put sunblock on their nose will receive half-priced tickets at the walk-up window, and the first 200 fans at The Birdcage will also receive a FREE Hawaiian Lei!

Fans who have purchased tickets to Friday night's game will be able to enter the ballpark at 5:15 PM and watch a live weather report from Brandon Spinner before the ball game! Saturday night is Military Appreciation Night, presented by the South Dakota Army National Guard! Gates will open at 5:00 PM on Saturday night with a first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. There will be a pre-game ceremony with special recognition of Military members. Be on the lookout for a big American Flag before the game and a special post-game Fireworks display after the final out!
