Canaries add Rockies' home run champ
SIOUX FALLS –Sioux Falls Canaries manager Steve Shirley capped a productive week of player signings on Friday by inking infielder Jared Clark, a highly-decorated Colorado Rockies prospect with a penchant for the long ball.
Clark (no relation to teammate Kirk Clark) belted 24 home runs in 2010 to lead the South Atlantic League while playing with the Class A Asheville Tourists. The 26-year-old earned league post-season all-star honors and the MiLB.com Organization Player of the Year award. Slowed by injury in 2011, he rebounded in 2012 to crack 24 home runs again, this time garnering another MiLB.com Organization Player of the Year award with the high-A Modesto Nuts of the California League. Clark batted .236 last season in Modesto with 27 doubles and 95 RBI.
“Jared will be an important bat in our lineup,” Shirley said of the Van Nuys, Calif., native. “He should be one for our fans to really keep an eye on.”
Entering just his fifth season, he already has 66 home runs and 254 RBI with a .273 lifetime average. He did not sign when the Cleveland Indians drafted him in 2007 nor when the Los Angeles Angels did so in 2008. The Rockies finally landed Clark in the 12th round of the 2009 draft out of Cal State Fullerton. He has spent his entire career thus far in the Rockies’ system.
The Sioux Falls Canaries roster now stands at 23 players signed for the 2013 season, 12 pitchers and 11 position players. League rules allow for a maximum of 28 players signed during spring training. The roster must be trimmed to 23 players by Opening Day.
The Sioux Falls Canaries begin their 21st season on May 16, 2013. Their home opener is May 17 against the Sioux City Explorers. Information about season tickets and advertising with the Sioux Falls Canaries is available by calling (605) 336-6060 or visiting www.sfcanaries.com.
