James Jones Returns To The Birds, Along With Two Other Signings

Top Canaries bullpen arm James Jones is headed back to Sioux Falls this summer. The hard-throwing right-hander has signed with the Canaries for the 2018 season along with two other players, the Birds announced Monday morning.

The team also announced former St. Paul Saints catcher Maxx Garrett has signed with the Canaries, and right-hander Neal Kunik will rejoin the Birds for the 2018 season.

Jones was one of the Canaries' most consistent pitchers last year, leading the team with a 2.57 ERA in 36 appearances. Originally drafted by the Padres in 2011, 2018 will be the 29-year-old's second year with the Canaries.

"We're looking for him to have a huge year for us, to solidify the back end of our bullpen," Canaries manager Mike Meyer said. Meyer added Jones will be a top contender for the Birds' closer job.

Garrett joins the Canaries after two seasons in St. Paul, where he earned a reputation as an excellent defensive catcher. He hit .254/.349/.376 in 54 games for the Saints in 2017.

"We're really excited to have Maxx here." Meyer said. "He's a grinder -- he just does things to help the team win."

Kunik returns to the Birds after a short stint with the team in 2017. Recovering from an injury, he gave up two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings for the Canaries toward the end of the season.

"We were really impressed with what Neal came in and did for us late in the year last year," Meyer said, adding he was impressed with the right-hander's competitive nature on the mound.

The Canaries open the 2018 season on Friday, May 18th with a Fireworks Night game against the Chicago Dogs. For more information on season tickets, suites, group outings, and corporate opportunities, call the Canaries front office at (605) 336-6060, or visit
