Canaries announce Ben Moore as Pitching Coach
SIOUX FALLS, SD – Sioux Falls Canaries Field Manager Mike Meyer has announced Wednesday morning that former Canaries great Ben Moore will be Pitching Coach for the 2017 season.
Moore, 35, began his professional career signing as an Amateur Free Agent with the New York Yankees. After two seasons in their organization, Ben joined the Independent ranks in 2005 with the Calgary Vipers.
Moore was arguably the greatest pitcher in Sioux Falls Canaries history, finishing his 12-year career in 2014. Ben pitched for the Birds’ from 2008-11, and again in 2013-14. Ben holds several Canaries All-Time pitching records, including wins (55), games (121), and strikeouts (698).
Following his playing career, Moore quickly found his way into coaching, serving as the pitching coach for the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League in 2015. Ben returned to the American Association in 2016, working as the pitching coach for the Southern Division Laredo Lemurs. Under Moore’s guidance, the Lemurs pitching staff led the American Association in multiple categories (3.66 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, .244 opponent’s BA, .352 opponent’s slugging, and 10 shutouts).
“Ben is a great baseball mind, with a long coaching career in front of him,” said Field Manager Mike Meyer. “He was a high IQ player, and has carried that knowledge over to the coaching side of the game. He’s very good at creating individual relationships with his players, and we are lucky to have him on board.”
Sioux Falls Canaries baseball enters their 25th season on May 18th against the Sioux City Explorers. The Canaries kick off their home opener on Saturday May 20th.
