Wichita, KS – Miles Nordgren was fantastic and Burt Reynolds solo home run proved to be the difference, as the Sioux Falls Canaries avoided the sweep and topped the Wichita Wingnuts, 1-0 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
Nordgren was masterful over his eight innings of work, keeping the Wingnuts, the top offense in the American Association, off the scoreboard and allowing just seven hits. Nordgren also struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in his best start of the season.
Eddie Medina almost equaled Nordgren’s performance against the Birds, striking out five and allowing just four hits over seven innings pitched.
But it was lone run Medina gave up came in the top of the fifth that was the difference.
Burt Reynolds led off the inning with a solo home run, his eighth of the season, to give the Birds a 1-0 lead.
Nordgren continued to put zeros on the board through the eighth, finishing the game with just 83 pitches, 62 of which were strikes.
Jose Ortega came on for the ninth, and the Wingnuts loaded the bases against him, but Ortega got Richard Prigatano to ground out to end the threat and give the Birds’ the victory and earn his tenth save of the season.
Nordgren picks up the win for the Canaries, who move to 26-29 on the season. Eddie Medina takes the loss for the Wingnuts, who fall to 38-17 on the season.
Facing the two best teams in the American Association, the Canaries finished their seven-game road trip 5-2, sweeping the St. Paul Saints and taking one of three from the Wingnuts.
The Birds return to The Birdcage for a three-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks starting July 18 at 7:05 PM. LHP Joe Bircher (3-4, 4.78 ERA) will take the hill for the Birds against the RedHawks Tuesday night with gates opening at 6:00 PM.
