Canaries Begin Exhibition Schedule
SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries hit the road on Monday for their first exhibition game of the 2017 American Association season. The Birds will travel to Yankton, SD for an I-29 battle against their long time rivals, the Sioux City Explorers. The two organizations will join forces to host a youth baseball clinic at 4:30 PM followed by an exhibition contest at 6:00 PM.
This annual event is sponsored by the Yankton Optimist Club. The organization began presenting this annual event in 1996 under an agreement with the Sioux Falls Canaries, and have carried on the tradition ever since. Proceeds from this special event will go towards various youth programs in the community. Fans can pick up free tickets at several business locations in Yankton, SD, including the Riverfront Broadcasting Studios, located at 202 W. 2nd street.
The Canaries will call on left-hander Joe Bircher to make the first start of the spring training schedule. Bircher, 27, made 19 starts for the Birds last season, finishing with a 6-6 record and 2.55 ERA. The Omaha, NE native holds a 14-18 record and 3.30 ERA in three seasons with Sioux Falls. The southpaw pitched well against the Explorers in 2016, finishing the season 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA. He made three starts against Sioux City, striking out 15 batters while allowing just four total runs over 20 innings of work.
Tonight’s game will not be broadcast live, but fans will be able to follow the action with scoring updates on the team’s Twitter account (@canaries) starting at 6:00 PM.
The Sioux Falls Canaries enter their 25th season on May 18th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park. The home portion of the 2017 schedule opens up on Saturday, May 20th at the Birdcage.
