Canaries Bring Back Infielder Blake Schmit
SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries announced Thursday morning that they have come to terms with Infielder Blake Schmit.
Schmit, 25, played his college ball at the University of Maryland, where he was drafted in the 26th round by the Minnesota Twins. Blake spent two seasons in the organization, ending the 2015 season in Class-A Fort Meyers prior to joining the Canaries in 2016.
This upcoming season will mark Schmit’s third with the Birds. In the previous two seasons, he has been a constant table setter at the top of the Canaries lineup. Totaling 189 games, he has batted a combined .298, scored 116 runs, stole 40 bases, and has a 60/107 strikeout to walk ratio. Although he has been great offensively, his defense at shortstop has been his most impressive attribute.
“Blake Schmit was a must sign for me this offseason, and it’s a relief for me, and our pitching staff, to know that he will be anchoring our defense at shortstop again in 2018,” says Canaries Skipper Mike Meyer. “Blake has tremendous instincts that make him a game changer at short. We are expecting Schmity to be an ignitor at the top of our lineup yet again with his on-base skills, and ability to create chaos on the bases.”
The Canaries open up their 26th season at home on Friday, May 18th against the Chicago Dogs. Following the game, fans will be dazzled by Friday Night Fireworks, brought to you by Orthopedic Institute and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.
