Canaries Bring Back Pair Of Relievers For Second Season
SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Tuesday afternoon that RHP James Jones and LHP Josh Ferrell will return for a second season.
Jones, 27, made 24 appearances for the Canaries last season, posting a 1-3 record and 4.91 ERA. The hard throwing right-hander allowed 14 runs (12 earned) over 22 innings while striking out 15 batters.
The Canaries acquired Jones last July in a trade with the Frontier League’s Windy City ThunderBolts. The Barlow, KY native made 18 appearances, striking out 18 batters over 17 innings.
Jones was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 33rd round of the 2011 MLB Draft, making it up to the AA level in 2012. He enters the 2016 season with a 7-13 record and 3.86 ERA in 4 professional seasons.
Ferrell, 25, enters his second professional season after going 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 37 relief appearances for the Birds.
The crafty southpaw was signed by Sioux Falls as an undrafted free-agent after being named the Texas Winter League Pitcher of the Year in 2014-15. He posted a 4-0 record and 0.82 ERA in 22 innings while recording 34 strikeouts for Pericos de Puebla.
The Sioux Falls Canaries enter their 24th season on May 19th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park.
