ST. PAUL, MINN. – The Sioux Falls Canaries (7-8) came into Friday night’s contest at the all new CHS Field in downtown St. Paul in search of their third straight win, but the St. Paul Saints (13-1) had other plans, defeating the Bird by the final score of 3-1.

Starting pitcher Joe Bircher (1-2, 2.12 ERA) had arguably his best performance of the season on Friday night. The lefty allowed three runs on four hits over 7 1/3 innings, and at one point retired 14 batters. Bircher ultimately left the game with one out in the seventh after giving up a walk to Saints second baseman, Sam Maus.

Relief pitcher Cameron McVey retired the final two batters in the inning, and recorded a strikeout in his sixth relief appearance of the season.

The Birds’ nearly completed the come-back effort in the top of the ninth inning, after getting back-to-back two-out singles from Jason Repko and pinch-hitter Tyler ShoverRJ Perucki roped a line drive into right field, but Saints outfielder Mike Kvasnicka made a diving grab to end the game.

Repko, Perucki and Michael Wing all had two hits in tonight’s on the night, with Canaries’ catcher Richard Stock picked up the lone RBI in the top of the sixth inning

With the loss today, the Birds’ go to (7-8) on the season. The Birds’ are back in action tomorrow evening as they try and take game two from the Saint’s. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Brett Gerritse (0-3, 5.51 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season for the Birds’ in search of his first win in a Canaries uniform.

The Canaries return to the Birdcage on Monday June 8th, as they open up a seven game home stand against the Grand Prairie AirHogs and St. Paul Saints.
