St. Paul, MN – Behind Miles Nordgren’s complete-game shutout and a six-run second inning, the Sioux Falls Canaries took the series opener at CHS Field against the St. Paul Saints, 7-0.
After leaving a man on base in the top of the first inning against Mark Hamburger, the Canaries roughed up the American Association’s leader in wins with six runs in the top of the second.
Chris Jacobs led off the frame with a single and moved up on Patrick Fiala’s double. Aaron Gretz followed with a walk to load the bases, and one batter later, Dan Motl drew the second walk of the inning to score the first run of the game for Sioux Falls.
Hamburger hit Ty Morrison to bring home another run before Burt Reynolds launched a grand slam, the second of the year for Sioux Falls, to extend the Birds’ lead 6-0.
Hamburger retired 10 of the next 11 Birds after all nine Canaries came up to bat in the top of the second before Fiala extended Sioux Falls’ lead to 7-0 with a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
On the mound for the Birds, Miles Nordgren allowed just two hits and five total base runners as he faced just two batters over the minimum and pitched a complete-game shutout against the Saints.
Nordgren struck out two, walked two and allowed just two hits over 9.0 innings of work against the Saints, picking up his fifth win of the season.
Hamburger takes the loss for the Saints, who fall to 41-35, while the Birds move to 35-41 with the victory. With the win, the Birds assure themselves of at least a split in the season series with the Saints, currently leading 7-4.
The Canaries continue their four-game series against the St. Paul Saints at Friday night at CHS Field with LHP Joe Bircher (4-5, 4.37 ERA) taking the mound for Sioux Falls in game two against St. Paul.
