SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries wrapped up their first home stand of the 2017 season with their biggest offensive output of the year. The Birds’ bats exploded for 16 runs on 17 hits to help secure the 16-3 win over St. Paul on Wednesday night.
Chris Jacobs continued his early season offensive tear, going 2-for-5 with 4 RBI and two runs scored. The Winston-Salem, NC native hit two home runs in the win, including a mammoth three-run shot over the left-field wall.
Patrick Fiala also blasted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning that helped cap off the big five-run frame. Fiala finished the night going 3-for-5 at the plate, with two RBI and three runs scored in his best offensive night of the season. BJ Guinn also had a three-hit night, adding an RBI and a run scored.
Canaries starting pitcher Joe Bircher (1-1, 2.77 ERA) earned his first victory of the season after holding the Saints to just two runs on four hits over six innings of work. Bircher struggled with his command much of the night, but did manage to piece together six strikeouts while walking four Saints batters.
The Birds snapped their two-game skip with the win on Wednesday night, and improve their overall record to 3-3 on the season. Thursday will be the first off-day of the season, but the Canaries will be back in action on Friday night as they open up a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers.
The Canaries took 2-of-3 in the season opening series against Sioux City last weekend, and will look to get back over .500 with a win on Friday night.
Right-hander Bryce Morrow (0-0, 6.75 ERA) will make his second start of the season against Sioux City on Friday night. Morrow allowed three runs on six hits over four innings in Sioux City last Friday night.
Fans can listen to all of the action starting at 6:45 p.m. on Sioux Falls Sports Radio, AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
The Canaries return home on Friday, June 2nd when they open up a three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones. Be sure to stick around after the game for the first Friday Night All-Star Fireworks Spectacular, presented by the Orthopedic Institute and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.
