Canaries Drop Rain-Filled Contest in Winnipeg Saturday
By Aaron Rosenberg
WINNIPEG, MANITOBA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (30-62) battled not only the Winnipeg Goldeyes (59-33), but Mother Nature as well, enduing a one hour rain delay during the 4th inning. Ultimately, the game would resume but the Birds were unable to snap their losing skid, which hit four games. Winnipeg's winning streak has now reached eight games with their 12-6 victory.
The Goldeyes wasted no time jumping on Canaries' starter Kyle Vazquez, scoring two runs in the 1st on Casey Haerther's double and then adding three more in the 2nd on Jake Blackwood's two-RBI double and an RBI single from Tyler Kuhn. Vazquez left the game after the rain delay at the start of the 4th inning and allowed six runs on eight hits in three frames. The bullpen didn't fare much better for the Birds with John Brebbia being tagged for two runs in the 5th and Josh Giles surrendering four including a homerun by former Canary Reggie Abercrombie, his 17th of the season.
The only threat mustered by the Canaries came in the 5th inning. Trailing 6-0, the Birds cut it to 6-4 using six hits and a walk while sending 10 men to the plate in the inning. Steve Tinoco drove in the first run and Brandon Jones followed with another RBI single. Chris Duffy's double brought home the final two runs in the frame. Duffy added a solo homerun in the 9th, his 14th of the year.
Matt Jackson (11-6) earned the win by going five innings and allowing four runs. Jackson allowed all four run in the 5th inning and gave up nine hits overall, while striking out four and walking one.
The Canaries will try to avoid a sweep on Sunday and will send lefty Joe Bircher to the mound. First pitch is 1:30 PM with pregame coverage getting underway at 1:15 on AM 1230 and FM 98.1 KWSN.
