SIOUX CITY,IA- It was a perfect evening for baseball in Sioux City for the Canaries season opener in terms of weather, but for the Canaries it wasn’t perfect enough.

The Canaries got off to a cruising start by Shelby Ford who hit a two out RBI single that would score Bryan Humphries. Ford is one of the only two returning Canaries from last year’s team. In the bottom of the first, Brett Gerritse walked back-to-back hitters but induced a bases loaded ground ball to end the Explorers threat.

It was a different story in the bottom of the second inning as the Explorers received a leadoff single from Tim Colwell. After a wild throw from Gerritse, Colwell rounded third to score from second. The Explorers than received a hit from Noah Perio to drive in Matt Koch for the second run of the evening. Explorer’s pitcher Jeff Marquez would fly through the third and fourth innings, only giving up a leadoff walk to Shelby Ford in the top of the fourth. Gerritse would answer back in the bottom of the fourth with a 1, 2, 3 inning for the Canaries.

Heading into the top of the fifth, it would become a pitcher’s duel as Marquez would have the strongest inning of his pitching debut by throwing only four pitches to sit down the Canaries in order. Gerritse would respond by throwing another 1, 2, 3 inning in the bottom half of the inning.

In the top of sixth, the Canaries would get a single from David Bergin, but that would be it for the Canaries. Going into the bottom of sixth inning, Jordan Sechler would make his first debut for the Canaries by giving up a single, but immediately got a ground ball double play from Ryan Court. But the Canaries would make their third error of the game as catcher Richard Stock would drop strike three on batter Tim Colwell. Sechler would finally strike out Matt Koch for out number three.

Going into the top of the seventh inning, the Explorers would send Rob Wort to the mound and give up a double to Michael Wing but nothing else. The Canaries would send Tyler Pearson to the hill and he would give up a double to Rene Tosoni, but that would be the least of the damage done in the bottom frame. It was a silent eighth inning as both teams would only produce one hit.

Running low on outs, Ford, Tewell and Wing would go up to the plate to face the Explorers closer Jose Flores. Shelby Ford would lead off the ninth with a single, but that would be it for the Canaries as Tewell would fly out to left field and Wing would ground into 4-6-3 double play.

The Canaries are back in action tomorrow evening as RHP Jeremy Strawn will take the mound. Strawn was the American Baseball Association Rookie-of-the-Year with a 9-0 record with the Laredo Lemurs.
