Canaries Drop Series Finale on Monday Afternoon

GARY, INDIANA— Gary SouthShore (23-26) picked up two runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as they took the series finale from Sioux Falls (22-28) by a final of 5-2 at the U.S. Steel Yard. The RailCats were able to jump on Birds’ starter Shawn Blackwell (1-7, 4.34 ERA) early in the contest after he tossed only five innings while giving up three earned runs on four hits.
Sioux Falls ultimately split the four game series with Gary SouthShore in their first meeting of the 2015 season. In the finale, the RailCats picked up three more runs, adding to their two run lead in the bottom of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. In the sixth, Will Rankin came onto relief for Sioux Falls. Shortly after, Tilman Pugh hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Adam Taylor to score, pushing the RailCats lead to three.
In the seventh, Cameron McVey toed the rubber for the Canaries, giving up two hits and a sacrifice fly to Adam Taylor that ended up scoring Alex Crosby. Finally in the eighth, Michael Schroeder roped an RBI single, scoring Jon Jones.
The two runs from the Canaries came in the top of the seventh when Vickash Ramjit laced a two-run homerun over the left field wall. In all, the Canaries left ten runners on base in the afternoon matchup. The Birds’ tallied two runs on seven hits, and committed no errors in the field.
Gary SouthShore starting pitcher Rene Solis (1-5, 3.70 ERA) picked up the win after throwing six innings, giving up no earned runs on three hits.
The Canaries will send Miguel Pena (5-4, 2.42 ERA) to the mound in search of his team leading, sixth win on Wednesday as they welcome the St. Paul Saints to the Birdcage. The first 500 fans that enter through the gates will automatically be entered into a raffle, in which they may win a grill, BBQ utensil kit and a cooler. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free fold-up Frisbee, courtesy of the Salvation Army. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with gates opening at 6 PM.
