Canaries Drop Series Finale on Wednesday Afternoon

WICHITA, Kan. – Sioux Falls (23-35) took an early lead on Wednesday afternoon, but Wichita (35-23) scored six runs in two innings to propel the Wingnuts past the Canaries. The Birds’ dropped the final game and ultimately lost the series by a final of 7-4 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
Sioux Falls answered right away in the top of the first when Jerome Pena hit a loud RBI double that allowed Chris Grayson to score who reached earlier on a single. In the top of the third, David Bergin and Brian Humphries hit back-to-back RBI doubles to put the Canaries ahead 2-0.
Wichita finally found their groove in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings when T.J. Mittelstaedt hit a two RBI double. Shortly after, Starling Rodriguez followed with an RBI triple to put Wichita ahead for the first time in the contest. The Wingnuts started to settle in on Canaries starter Jeremy Strawn (2-8, 4.58 ERA) after they picked up three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jayce Ray picked up an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning, and David Espinosa scored on a wild pitch. Strawn’s day was done after that as he tossed six innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits while also picking up the loss.
The Birds’ slowly found a way back into the ballgame after they scored two runs in the top half of the seventh. It was Bergin and Humphries answering again with RBI doubles to put Sioux Falls back within two runs. Wichita would pick up an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a Joash Brodin RBI double.
Wichita sent in their closer Dakota Watts in the top of the ninth to shut the door on the Canaries, picking up his eighth save of the year.
The Canaries continue action on Thursday evening as travel south to Amarillo, Texas to take on the Thunderheads in a four game series. Sioux Falls will send Tyler Pearson (2-2, 4.58 ERA) to the mound in search of his third win in a Canaries uniform.
