Canaries Drop Series Finale to Fargo-Moorhead

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-6) got off to a slow start and were never able to catch up as their divisional foe, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (3-7) tallied sixteen hits on six runs to take the series by a final score of 6-3 in front of 2,189 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Canaries starting pitcher Brett Gerritse (0-3, 5.51 ERA) threw six innings for the Birds’, allowing four runs on thirteen hits to go along with five strikeouts. The right hander worked in and out of jams in the first two innings but ran into trouble allowing three runs in the top of the third. Gerritse gave up a run in the fourth, but settled in the middle innings before exiting the game in the seventh after a leadoff single to Fargo-Moorhead’s Frank Salerno.

Lefty Josh Ferrell entered the game in relief and walked a batter, but didn’t allow a run in the seventh. Ferrell struck out the leadoff batter in the eighth, but three straight batters reached allowing two runs to score, pushing the RedHawks lead to 6-3.

After a 1-2-3 inning for the Birds’ in the bottom of the eighth, RHP Nathan Stewart made his first Canaries appearance striking out the side in a scoreless top of the ninth.

Harrison Kain and Jerome Pena reached on back-to-back singles in the bottom the ninth, but Bryan Humphries and David Bergin each struck out, leaving both runners on base to end the game.

Bergin paced the Canaries offense going 2-for-4 at the plate, with a walk and 2 RBI.

With the loss tonight, the Birds’ fall to 5-6 on the season, and finish their eight game home stand with a 3-5 record.

The Birds’ hit the road on Tuesday to face the reigning North Division champion, Winnipeg Goldeyes. Jeremy Strawn (1-0, 1.35 ERA) will make his third start of the season for the Birds’ in search of his second straight win.
