SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries returned to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night to open up a three-game, weekend series against the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Birds received a complete game victory from starting pitch Dylan Thompson who carried his team to a 2-1 win in front of 3,259 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Thompson (4-1, 2.15 ERA) put together his best performance of the season, holding the Saltdogs to one unearned run on four hits over nine innings to earn his first complete game victory of the season. His only run of the night came in the top of the 3rd inning when Tyler Urps reached base on a one-out single and advanced to second on a throwing error from Canaries Shortstop Blake Schmit. Uprs scored one batter later on a Cesar Valera RBI ground out to make it a 1-0 Lincoln lead.

Thompson locked back in after the rocky third inning, retiring 18 of his final 21 batters faced to pick up his fourth win of the season, and his third victory in his last four starts overall.

The Canaries trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the 5th inning before Ethan Chapman slashed a one-out single into left-center. Darwin Perez backed that up with an RBI ground-rule double into the Canaries bullpen in the right field corner to tie the game up at 1-1.

It would stay a tied ball game until the bottom of the 7th inning when Michael Pair surprised everyone with a lead-off bunt attempt that was recovered by the Saltdogs catcher and thrown over the first baseman’s head. The lead-off error sparked a late inning rally for the Birds, with Pair scoring the eventual winning run on another throwing error, this time by the Saltdogs shortstop, on a potential double play ball that would have ended the inning.

The Canaries were led offensively by Ethan Chapman, who finished the night going 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of single and a run scored. Darwin Perez also had a good night, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk.

The final weekend series of the 2016 season continues on Saturday night with Fan Appreciation Night at the Birdcage. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM with RHP Stephen Bougher (1-8, 5.40 ERA) facing off against Lincoln Saltdogs RHP Ryan O’Sullivan (3-3, 4.53 ERA).
