Gary, IN – The Sioux Falls Canaries couldn’t muster much at the plate and fell to the Gary SouthShore RailCats, 2-0, Wednesday night at the U.S. Steel Yard.

Fresh off a complete-game, two-hit shutout against the St. Paul Saints, Miles Nordgren struggled out of the gate against the RailCats.

Nordgren allowed back-to-back hits to lead off the bottom of the first inning: Alex Crosby doubled and Colin Willis followed with a RBI single to give the RailCats an early 1-0 lead.

Nordgren settled down after the first two batters, but Gary’s Daniel Minor did him one better on the mound for the RailCats. Minor didn’t allow a hit and walked just one batter over 3.1 innings pitched, but was relieved in the fourth inning.

The Birds couldn’t find any offense though against Kyle Chavez either, who allowed just one hit and two base runners over 1.1 innings of relief.

And the RailCats got to Nordgren again in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases and scoring on Willis’ RBI groundout to extend their lead to 2-0.

Nordgren, though, put together another terrific start, another quality start and his second-straight complete-game, allowing just two runs on six hits over 8.0 innings pitched while striking out three and walking just two.

But Nordgren took the tough-luck loss as the Birds couldn’t must anything against a horde of RailCats relievers at the plate.

Minor, Chavez, Carlos Pinales, Jake Mathys and Drasen Johnson combined to allow just three hits and six total base runners for the Birds, shutting out the Canaries at the U.S. Steel Yard.

Nordgren takes the loss for Sioux Falls, who fall to 37-44. Chavez picks up the win for the RailCats, who move to 46-35 on the year with the victory.

The Canaries wrap up their three-game set against the Gary SouthShore RailCats at the U.S. Steel Yard Wednesday night at 7:10 PM, sending LHP Joe Bircher (4-6, 4.79 ERA) to the mound against RailCats’ RHP Ayrton Costa (2-1, 4.82 ERA).
