Canaries fall in Walk-Off Fashion to the T-Bones, 4-1 in 10 Innings
Kansas City, KS – The Sioux Falls Canaries fell in walk-off fashion to the Kansas City T-Bones, 4-1 in 10 innings, in game one of the three-game series at Community America Ballpark.
Grady Wood and Calvin Drummond twirled opposing shutouts early on in Kansas City, as the Canaries and T-Bones combined for just six hits over the first five innings.
But with Drummond tiring in the top of the sixth, the Canaries got on the scoreboard for the first time since the third inning on Saturday against Winnipeg.
Chris Jacobs stepped to the plate with one out in the top of the sixth and launched his league-leading 13th home run of the season, giving the Birds a 1-0 lead. A dropped third strike and two singles followed Jacobs’ home run, allowing the Canaries to load the bases, but Drummond got Dan Motl to ground into a double play on a check swing to end the threat.
In the bottom of the inning though, the T-Bones came right back, loading the bases and tying things up on Kyle Petty’s sacrifice fly, but Wood limited the damage to just one run, keeping the Birds and T-Bones tied.
Both bullpens would shut down their opponents the rest of the way though, as Canaries RHPs Dylan Thompson, James Jones and Jose Ortega put together three scoreless innings for the Birds, while T-Bones RHPs Myles Smith and Luis Paula kept the Canaries off the scoreboard in the seventh, eighth and ninth.
But the in the bottom of the tenth, Marcus Lemon reached on an infield and Kyle Petty walked before Jordan Edgerton launched a three-run shot off Ortega to give the T-Bones a 4-1 win in 10 innings.
Ortega takes the loss for the Canaries, while Paula picks up the win for Kansas City. Wood allowed just one run on seven hits, striking out six and walking two over six innings pitched, but takes a no-decision for the Birds.
With the loss, the Canaries fall to 19-24 on the season, while the T-Bones move to 25-17 on the year.
