Canaries Fall Short In Front of a Sellout Crowd at Sioux Falls Stadium

SIOUX FALLS, SD—The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-20) stepped on the Winnipeg Goldeyes (14-18) early on Friday night, but couldn’t shut the door as the Birds’ fell 5-4 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,556 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Sioux Falls answered first in the bottom of the second inning as David Bergin hit a monster solo homerun over the center field wall. The Canaries went to the plate in the bottom of the third inning with a one run lead and tacked on another as Michael Wing doubled to drive in Jerome Pena who reached on a triple earlier in the inning.

Winnipeg answered with three runs in the top of the fifth inning as Brady Wilson, Luis Alen and Kyle Brandenberg all scored for the Goldeyes. Sioux Falls later responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Richard Stock hit his sixth homerun to tie the game at three apiece. The Goldeyes didn’t go down without a fight as they tacked on runs in the top of the seventh and eighth innings. Sioux Falls picked up their last run of the ballgame in the bottom of the eighth when David Bergin drove in Jerome Pena on an RBI single.

Winnipeg’s Jon Weber remained untouchable as he picked up three singles and a double against Sioux Falls pitching. Kyle Brandenberg also picked up two hits and an RBI in the contest.

Canaries starting pitcher, Joe Bircher (2-2) recorded the loss as he tossed six innings on seven hits and three runs. Winnipeg’s Nick Hernandez (3-2) picked up his third win of the year for the Goldeyes.

The Birds’ will try to snap their season worst, five-game losing on Saturday night when they send LHP Miguel Pena (4-2, 2.92 ERA) to the mound to battle Winnipeg’s RHP Matt Jackson (2-3, 5.45 ERA).

Saturday night the Canaries welcome back the band “Natural Disaster” beginning right when the gates open at 4 PM. Fans can also enjoy bottled Coca-Cola products for $2 from 4-5 PM.
