Kansas City, KS – The Sioux Falls Canaries fell to the Kansas City T-Bones, 6-5, in the final game of their 10-game road trip at Community America Ballpark.
The Canaries took an early lead on Jabari Henry’s solo home run in the top of the first inning, but Miles Nordgren’s first innings struggles continued in the bottom of the frame, and the T-Bones scored five in the bottom of the first to take a 5-1 lead.
Nordgren, however, settled down after a rough first inning, allowed just four hits, all singles, over his next four innings of work.
And as Nordgren settled down, the Canaries mounted their comeback. In the top of the third, Sioux Falls loaded the bases on a walk and two hit-by-pitches, before cutting the T-Bones lead to 5-3 on Ty Morrison’s RBI single and Louis Mele’s RBI walk.
Just a half inning later, Mike Falsetti walked and came around to score on Burt Reynolds RBI groundout, cutting Kansas City’s lead to one. And in the top of the fifth, Chris Jacobs led off with his league-leading 14th home run to tie the game at five.
Nordgren allowed five runs, all of which were unearned, on eight hits, walking three and striking out a season-high five batters over 5.0 innings of work, taking a no-decision.
Bo Hellquist relieved Nordgren in the sixth and worked a scoreless inning of relief, but the T-Bones scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead.
Hellquist walked the leadoff batter but retired the next two before the Canaries’ lone All-Star, Dylan Thompson, came in to try to get the final out of the inning. But before he could, Jerome Pena brought the run home with a RBI single, giving the T-Bones a 6-5 lead.
The Canaries had their chances, putting runners in scoring position in the top of the sixth and eighth, but Sioux Falls couldn’t bring them home, leaving 11 total runners on base.
Hellquist takes the loss for Sioux Falls, falling to 0-1 on the season, while Myles Smith picks up the victory, and Cody Winiarski the save, for the T-Bones. With the win, the T-Bones move to 26-18, while the Canaries fall to 20-25 on the season.
