Canaries Lose Fifth Straight On Sunday Afternoon

SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux Falls Canaries lost their fifth straight game, and were swept by the Sioux City Explorers after losing by the final score of 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field and Lewis & Clark Park. 

Starting pitcher Stephen Bougher (1-1, 4.26 ERA) suffered his first loss of the year after giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits over six innings of work. The Papillion, NE native allowed all six runs over the first three innings, including three runs in the bottom of the first. 

Bougher settled down in the middle innings, retiring eight of his last nine batters faced, before giving way to the bullpen. 

Relief pitcher Shane Street was roughed up in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing two runs on five hits.  Canaries closer Chase Johnson pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two Sioux City batters in his lone inning of work. 

The Canaries offense scored four runs over the final three innings, but saw their comeback attempt fall short with Blake Schmit grounding into a game ending double play. 

Aaron Owen paced the Canaries offensive attack, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored.  The Canaries outfielder collected his first hit in a Sioux Falls uniform in the top of the fifth inning when he doubled down the line in left field. He scored the first Canaries run of the afternoon two batters later on a fielder’s choice. 

Frank Martinez also had a good day offensively, going 1-for-2 at the plate with a pair of walks, an RBI and a run scored. 

The Canaries continue their seven-game road-trip on Monday night in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  The Birds’ will send LHP Misael Siverio (1-0, 2.45 ERA) to the mound in the series opener against Winnipeg Goldeyes’ RHP Mikey O’Brien.
