SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-16) trailed from the beginning of the first inning and never found a way to capitalize on Sunday afternoon as the Sioux City Explorers (22-7) took game three by a final of 8-3 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Sioux Falls starting pitcher Miguel Pena (4-2, 2.93) gave up four runs in the first inning after Brock Kjeldgaard hit a deep shot over the left field wall for a two-run homer. The Explorers would go on to send nine batters to the plate in the top half of the inning. Pena threw six innings on eleven hits and gave up three earned runs in the contest.
Sioux Falls picked up runs in the bottom half of the six, eight and nine innings, but were held to only four hits. Brian Humphries paced the Canaries offense going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run.
The Canaries missed several opportunities as Sioux City tallied five errors and seven walks. Sioux Falls stranded nine runners on base throughout the afternoon.
Sioux City starting pitcher Ryan Zimmerman worked five scoreless innings as he threw seven innings on two hits and no earned runs while striking out seven Canaries batters.
The Birds’ hit the road for two games as they visit the Wichita Wingnuts with first pitch beginning at 7:05 PM at Lawrence DuMont Stadium. RHP Jeremy Strawn (2-3, 4.08 ERA) will get the nod as he looks for his third win in a Canaries uniform.
