Canaries Open 2016 Season with 3-0 Win in Sioux City
SIOUX CITY, IA- The Sioux Falls Canaries (1-0) opened up the 2016 American Association season on Thursday night with a 3-0 win over the Sioux City Explorers (0-1) in front of 1,421 fans at Mercy Field & Lewis and Clark Park.
Cuban LHP Misael Siverio (1-0, 0.00 ERA) looked dominant in his first start of the season, striking out seven Sioux City batters over 5 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first win in a Canaries uniform.
The Explorer’s pieced together a small rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, collecting a pair of singles and an error to load the bases before rookie RHP Shane Street came out of the bullpen to get the final out on a well-hit ground ball to shortstop Jerome Pena.
Relievers Josh Ferrell and James Jones tossed a pair of shutout innings in the 7th and 8th before closer Chase Johnson shut the door in the 9th for his first save of the season. In all, the bullpen racked up 5 strikeouts while walking one Sioux City batter over the final 3 1/3 innings.
Canaries catcher Cameron Garfield provided the offense, driving in all three runs with a bases clearing RBI double in the top of the second. Centerfielder Ethan Chapman also had a good night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
The series shifts back up I-29 on Friday night with the Canaries kicking off the home portion of their 2016 schedule on Friday, May 20th. RHP Shawn Blackwell (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his first start of the season against LHP Cody Forsythe (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
