Canaries Overcome Rain Delay, Pick Up 4-3 Win in Fargo

FARGO, ND- The Sioux Falls Canaries (13-13) had to sit through a nearly two-hour rain delay on Tuesday night, but managed to sneak in the second game of their four-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (7-18) with a 4-3 win at Newman Outdoor Field.

David Bergin returned to the Canaries lineup after missing the last two games with a sore neck, and put together a solid night at the place. The designated hitter was the only Birds’ batter to post a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, and a run scored.

Canaries starting pitcher Miguel Pena (4-1, 2.65 ERA) returned to the mound in search of his team leading fourth win of the season, facing the only American Association team to defeat the lefty in 2015.  Pena allowed three runs on a season high 12 hits over 6 2/3 innings, but did not walk a batter while facing 33 men.

Closer, Chase Johnson earned the save for the Birds’ after striking out former Canaries outfielder, Drew Muren to end the game.  The save was Johnson’s 6th of the season, 4th most in the American Association in 2015.

Muren almost single handedly kept his team in the game for much of the night, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two RBI’s, and a run scored.

RedHawks’ starting pitcher, Mike Mason (1-2, 5.89 ERA) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on 5 hits over 5 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season.

With the win on Tuesday night, the Birds’ guaranteed themselves at least a series split, with two more games to be played tonight and Thursday in Fargo.  Canaries RHP Stephen Bougher (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his second start of the season on Wednesday night, against RedHawks starting pitcher Brandon Mann (1-2, 5.26 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with the Canaries pre-game show hitting the airwaves at 6:45 on Sioux Falls Sports Radio, AM-1230, and FM-98.1, KWSN.

The Canaries return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night in a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers, who currently sit in first place in the American Association’s central division.
