Canaries Power Their Way To 8-6 Win In Yankton

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries opened their spring training schedule with an 8-6 win over the Sioux City Explorers on Monday night at Riverside Field in Yankton, SD.
The Canaries received a strong start from left-hander Joe Bircher, who did not allow a run or a hit over two innings of work. Right-hander Dylan Thompson also worked a scoreless inning before giving up a pair of runs in the top of the 4th inning to give Sioux City an early 2-0 lead.
The Birds tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the 4th inning on a Chris Jacobs two-run home run. Jabari Henry also added a two-run blast in the bottom of the 6th inning to give the Canaries a 5-4 advantage.
Blake Schmit paced the Canaries offensive attack, going 3-for-5 with a strikeout and a run scored. In all, the Canaries tallied eight runs on 11 hits in their first win of the season.
The same two teams will be back in action on Friday, May 12th, with an exhibition contest scheduled for 6:00 PM in Huron, SD.
The Sioux Falls Canaries enter their 25th season on May 18th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park.
