Canaries Re-Sign Sioux Falls Native Patrick Fiala
SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Wednesday morning that they have come to terms with infielder Patrick Fiala for the 2018 American Association season.
Fiala, 24, returns for his third season in a Canaries uniform after taking the field for 82 games over parts of the last two seasons. Patrick joined the Birds for their final 15 games during the 2016 season after completing his stellar college career at Augustana University. In 2017, Fiala misses 33 games with a broken bone in his foot. Upon his return to the lineup, Patrick picked up where he left off, finishing the season with a .265/.337/.412/.749 slash line while adding 24 extra base hits, including 5 home runs.
“We are thrilled to have Pat back for the 2018 season,” says Canaries skipper Mike Meyer. “He has worked very hard on his athleticism and quickness, which will allow for even more positional flexibility. He is a solid defender on the corners, both in the infield and in the outfield. A guy with his defensive flexibility is a manager’s best friend. His bat is only getting better as well, constantly making improvements with every plate appearance. We are expecting big things from him this season, and we can’t wait to get going.”
The Canaries kick off their season at home on Friday, May 18th against the newest American Association Club, the Chicago Dogs. The popular Friday Night Fireworks will follow the conclusion of the game.
