Grand Prairie, TX – Behind six insurance runs in the ninth, the Sioux Falls Canaries defeated the Texas AirHogs, 10-4 Saturday night at AirHog Stadium.
For the second straight game, the Canaries took the lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Jabari Henry doubled and Ty Morrison followed with a single, moving Henry over to third and extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
Chris Jacobs followed with a RBI single, scoring Henry from third and giving the Birds’ a 1-0 lead.
And the Birds extended their lead with one run in the top of the fourth and two in the top of the fifth.
Jacobs scored on a wild pitch from third in the top of the fourth, and the Birds loaded the bases in the fifth, scoring runs on Burt Reynolds’ RBI single and Blake Schmit’s bases loaded walk.
On the hill for the Canaries, Miles Nordgren increased his stretch of scoreless innings to 14 with three scoreless frames to start the game, striking out two and working around three hits.
But the AirHogs snapped Nordgren’s scoreless innings streak with a run in the fourth, and another in the fifth and sixth, cutting Sioux Falls’ lead to 4-3.
Nordgren allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings pitched, walking one and striking out three before being relieved by Dylan Thompson to start the seventh inning.
Thompson allowed a walk and a hit in the bottom of the seventh but got out of the inning unscathed to keep the Birds lead at one.
The Birds drew seven walks over the first three frames but left nine runners on base over the same stretch, and 12 runners on base through eight innings. But it would not matter as the Canaries tacked on six insurance runs in the top of the ninth.
A single, error and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for the Birds against Austin Kubitza in the top of the ninth before four singles and an error unloaded them, giving the Birds a 10-3 lead.
The Canaries sent 10 men to the plate in the top of the ninth, with everyone but Jacobs reaching base. In total, the Birds scored 10 runs on 12 hits, while also drawing seven walks and three hit-by-pitches.
After working a scoreless eighth, Andrew Woeck came back out for the ninth and allowed a run, but the Birds turned a 3-6-1 to end the threat and give the Canaries the 10-4 victory.
Nordgren picks up the victory for Sioux Falls, who move to 28-32 on the year, while Michael Freeman takes the loss for the AirHogs, who fall to 25-35 on the season.
