Canaries Roster Takes Shape With The Signing Of Two Catchers

Sioux Falls, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries are pleased to announce the signing of catchers Richard Stock and Tyler Tewell for the 2015 season. 

Tewell, 23, was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 14th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of Appalachian State University, where he hit .324 with 32 extra-base hits and 61 RBI in three collegiate seasons.  

The Charlotte, North Carolina native played three seasons in the Braves minor league system, hitting .247 with 27 doubles, 20 homeruns, and 108 RBI.  He has been a solid defender behind the plate during his career, throwing out 23 percent of would-be base stealers. 

 Tewell played in 80 games for the High-A Lynchburg HillCats in 2014, where he hit .251 with 12 doubles, 8 homeruns, and a career high 45 RBI.  

Stock, 24, was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 23rd round of the 2012 MLB draft after playing in one collegiate season at the University of Nebraska.  He hit .351 for the Cornhuskers in 2012, collecting 20 doubles, and 4 home runs to go along with his 45 RBI. 

The Westlake Village, California native played for the Indians Class-A affiliate Lake County Captains each of the last two seasons, hitting a combined .271 with 35 extra-base hits and 57 RBI.  Stock hit .261 for the Captains last year, collecting 18 extra-base hits to go along with 26 RBI. He is also a solid defender, throwing out 21 percent of base stealers in 2014. 

“We are fortunate to have two really solid catching prospects this season,” Said first year manager Chris Paterson, “These guys both know how to handle a pitching staff, and should be a lot of fun to watch this summer.” 

The Canaries report to the Birdcage for Spring Training on May 7th and begin their 23rd season on May 21st-23rd in Sioux City, IA.  The Birds open their 2015 home schedule on Sunday, May 24th against the Explorers at 4:05 PM.  Season, partial, group and suite tickets are on sale now by contacting the Canaries office at 605-336-6060.
