Canaries Shutout 14-0 by Winnipeg in Series Finale
By Aaron Rosenberg
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Winnipeg trounced the Sioux Falls Canaries (29-58) in the series finale Sunday afternoon, using six homeruns to power their way to a convincing 14-0 victory. The Goldeyes (53-33) took the final two games of the weekend to ensure the series victory and lengthen their North Division lead to 8 games over St. Paul with two weeks to play.
Kyle Vazquez (5-7) suffered the loss for the Canaries, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits while striking out just one and issuing two walks. The righthander lasted just 4.2 innings and is winless in four starts since pitching in the All-Star Game in late July. Canaries pitchers allowed six homeruns on the day; three to Josh Mazzola, two to Jake Blackwood and a final blast to Jordan Guida who pinch-hit in the 9th. Winnipeg strung together 18 hits and all 10 Goldeyes who came to the plate had at least one base hit.
Nick Hernandez (10-2) stifled the Canaries bats en route to his 10th win of the season. The southpaw tossed seven shutout innings and surrendered just two hits, all while striking out six Canaries and walking just two. On a positive note for the Birds, Steve Tinoco extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the 1st inning. That streak is the longest by a Canary this season.
After an off day on Monday, the Canaries return to action Tuesday night at the Birdcage when they host the Sioux City in the first game of two. First pitch is 7:05 PM and fans will receive 2-for-1 admission with the donation of any non-perishable item to Feeding South Dakota.
