Canaries Shutout in Winnipeg Nightcap 2-0
By Aaron Rosenberg
WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (58-33) have caused the Canaries (30-61) fits all season and continued their success against the Birds, shutting them out 2-0 to sweep Friday's doubleheader. Kye Winter (1-3) pitched well for the Canaries, but was outshone by Nick Hernandez (11-2) of Winnipeg who threw his second shutout of the season en route to his 11th victory. The Canaries have lost 10 of their 13 contests to the Goldeyes in 2014.
The game started in almost identical fashion as the one earlier Friday evening with Steve Tinoco and Brandon Jones both reaching on base hits to start the 1st. However, Hernandez was able to strand both runners and was quickly handed a lead by his offense in the bottom half of the frame. Tyler Kuhn plated home the first run for Winnipeg with his double and Casey Haerther rove in a secon run with his RBI groundout and the Goldeyes led 2-0 after one inning.
It was all pitching the rest of the way with neither side getting on the scoreboard again. Hernandez finished his outing allowing just five hits while striking out four and walking just one. Winter went five innings in defeat, surrendering just four hits and collecting three strikeouts against just a single walk. Joe Testa relieved Winter to throw a scoreless 6th inning for the Canaries who will have a rested bullpen for the remainder of the series thanks to Winter's and Matt Wickswat's deep outings on Friday.
Steve Tinoco had two hits in the nightcap and also had a pair of base hits in the early game. AJ Kirby-Jones hit his 22nd homerun in game one for the Canaries. Kuhn led the Goldeyes offensively with a homerun and two RBI in game one and his RBI double in the second game.
The series continues Saturday evening with first pitch at 6:00 PM. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 on AM 1230 and FM 98.1 KWSN.
