Canaries Sign Former Big League Infielder
Sioux Falls, SD—The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Wednesday morning that the club has signed former major league infielder Angel Chavez to a contract.
The 34-year-old Chavez has appeared in over 1,400 games during his 15 professional seasons. The utility infielder made it to the big leagues in 2005, posting a .263 batting average while appearing in 10 games for the San Francisco Giants. Overall, Chavez holds a .269 career batting average to go along with his 258 doubles, 101 home runs, and 681 RBI.
Chavez hit .281 while appearing in 704 games at the AAA level with the Giants, Phillies, Orioles, Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers. His best season came in 2008 while playing for the Dodgers’ AAA affiliate, the Las Vegas 51’s, where he posted a career highs in batting average (.292), RBI’s (68), and extra-base hits (41).
Chavez appeared in 70 games for the Atlantic League’s Southern Maryland Blue Crab’s during the 2014 season, finishing the year with a .269 batting average, to go along with his 38 RBI’s and 12 extra-base hits.
In order to make room on the 22-man roster, The Canaries announced the release of infielder Michael Broad, who hit .226 in 10 games with the Birds’.
Chavez will be in uniform on Wednesday night when the Canaries open up a three-game series against the American Association’s wild-card leading, Kansas City T-Bones (32-25).
